Suit filed in drunken-driving death
Daniel Tepfer, Connecticut Post

BRIDGEPORT - The wife of a Stratford minister, killed by a drunken driver last year, is suing the driver and the West Haven bar where he was drinking prior to killing her husband.

Alan B. Broome, of Peacock Drive in Stratford, a Pentecostal minister and counselor with the state Department of Mental Retardation, was killed Feb. 5, 2007, when his car was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 91 in Wallingford.

In her lawsuit, filed today in Superior Court, Broome's widow, Renee Broome, charges the driver, Israel Quintero of New Haven, with recklessly causing her husband's death.

The suit also claims that Saul Castro, owner of Utopia/Maya's Cafe on Orange Avenue in West Haven, contributed to Broome's death because his employees illegally continued to serve alcohol to Quintero even though he was intoxicated.

"Alcohol and driving have once again proved to be a deadly combination," said Jason Tremont, Broome's lawyer. "The tragedy of this senseless incident is that it not only took away Alan Broome's life, but devastated the lives of his wife, children and family, and deprived those less fortunate in life whom he helped through his work and in his spare time."

Neither Quintero, who is serving an eight-year prison term for causing Broome's death, nor Castro could be reached for comment.

Broome was headed for work, traveling north on Interstate 91, when Quintero crashed into him.

According to the police report, Quintero had a blood/alcohol content of 0.230, nearly three times the legal limit.

Quintero was later convicted of vehicular manslaughter.
