Tremont & Sheldon Obtains Over $1 Million in Jury Verdicts for Clients in 2 Days
Tremont & Sheldon was able to obtain over $1 million in damages by winning two high profile cases for their clients in a two-day period of time. Below are the articles featured in the Connecticut Post detailing the cases.
Woman Wins Big Malpractice Suit
Daniel Tepfer, Connecticut Post (Bridgeport, CT)
STAMFORD - A Superior Court jury Friday awarded a Norwalk woman more than $800,000 in a malpractice claim against a Norwalk doctor.
The six-member jury deliberated three days before finding that Dr. James Guthrie failed to properly diagnose colon cancer for 79-year-old Theresa Lombardo.
The jury ordered the doctor to pay her $832,000.00. "The jury spoke today and vindicated what Theresa has been saying all along," said her lawyer, Jason Tremont. "Doctors, like anyone else, have to be held accountable for their mistakes."
Tremont said Lombardo was never timely advised to have a colonoscopy or barium enema by the defendant despite her age and after the discovery of a colon polyp during a sigmoidoscopy.
"As a result of the delay, the plaintiff was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer and was required to undergo chemotherapy and multiple surgeries," he continued.
Dr. Guthrie denied responsibility and made no settlement offer.
Cyclist Awarded $221,146 in Crash Lawsuit
Daniel Tepfer, Connecticut Post (Bridgeport, CT)
BRIDGEPORT - A Superior Court jury Wednesday awarded more than $200,000 to a city hairdresser injured four years ago when a car hit him as he was riding his bicycle in Fairfield.
The six-person jury deliberated about tow hours before awarding 51-year-old Alec Hanna $221,146.71.
"We were able to persuade the jury that these impairments represented significant disabilities for a man who spends his life on his feet, working with his hands," said Hanna's lawyer, Robert R. Sheldon of Tremont and Sheldon.
According to Sheldon, on Sept. 5, 2002, Hanna was riding his 10-speed bicycle south bound on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield.
As he approached Bennington Drive, a BMW driven by Jane Savio, formerly of Fairfield, turned left into Hanna's path, crashing into the bicycle.
Sheldon said the impact knocked Hanna off his bicycle. He struck his head on the car's windshield and landed face down in the roadway unconscious.
